Meh wish I could choose the companions though. Doctor seems to have a thing for redheads.
Things I wish I could do but probably never will; 1)be the doctor in DW 2)design a model for WH 40k 3)write a play 4)get a shark submarine 5)get beamed up by Scotty 6)fus to dah someone successfully 7)defy laws of physics 8)drive a forklift 9) make a 11th doctor/spider teddy 10)use all the functions on a Swiss Army knife 11)simply walk into mordor 12)paint red dwarf green (smeg!) 13)get a pet emu 14) get the doctors big scarf(cause I like scarves. ) 15)get Ramirez to do nothing. 17) make the number sixteen turn into 17 17)sing to the ood. 18)make a dw poem.
I never really grew attached to these companions. Don't get me wrong, they were great! I even have the scene where Rory intimidated the cybermen play on loop as my screensaver. But.... I just couldn't grow attached to them. They had great sub plots, amazing characterizations, and were funny even. But Rory died every time. Every time I started to really like him he DIED. And Amy.... I don't know why I don't like her. Everything tells me I should like her. I guess it's just that she was too good of a character, if that's possible.
But, now for the reason I'm really posting here. We've come to the end of the cycle. Never again will we see Rory die, or Amy grieve, or the Doctor have that sort of mixed feelings face. So hats off to a great performance from our favorite Ponds.
Actually, I totally agree with everything you say. This newest rendition of the Doctor Who show is fun but doesn't engage me like before. They say you will always love your first Doctor and for me that was 9 and 10. And I loved all of their companions because they were wonderfully flawed and fun. Like you, I never grew attached to the Ponds. At least not *as* attached. Amy is smart, pretty, and sassy. Logically I should like her but because she spends so much time on the Doctor's pedestal I guess it put me off. And sometimes they both (Rory and Amy) have such a blasé attitude about the wonderful/horrible situations that it kills the mood for me.
Until you mentioned it I never noticed how often Rory gets shafted just as I'm really starting to like him. Poor guy.
We're about to watch the last 2 episodes tonight and I can't wait to see how it ends. They aren't my favorite companions but it was still a fun ride. I too wish them all the best.
I wonder who/what the next companion(s) will be like. As with Rose, Jackie, Micky/Ricky, Martha, Donna, Wilfred and Rory we will probably be hesitant to like them at first, watch them get traumatized, and end up loving them as well.
Haha, who am I kidding? Old man Wilfred was lovable from the start! And then there was Captain Jack...
On an unrelated note: What's up with the lighting on the show? Seriously, it distracted me like crazy for a whole season.
They're trying to be really cinematic this season, and it's affecting their production. Something about each episode being its own blockbuster. Plus, two episodes were shot almost entirely inside tunnels/spacecrafts. The lighting on this last two is really good.
I suppose I can see that. It's just that the over abuse of the cool/warm claustrophobic lighting and camera shots took some getting used to. Either I've adapted or they eased up because I hardly noticed it this season. More than anything it was just me being grumpy and nit-picking.
It's just kinda old now.
I hope you are as excited about the new companion as I am.
